Global Connections . . .

. . . In Worship

Never in our history have we been more aware that we live in a global village. Every day brings us news and pictures from some far-flung corner of the world. We hear detailed reports on how issues of trade with other nations and their monetary policies directly impact our own pocketbooks. The Internet allows us to meet new people and to keep up with old friends instantly and often.

When we gather around the communion table on World Communion Sunday, October 6, we will do so with the keen awareness of the connections we share with the human community. It will be a day to pray for our common brokenness and to celebrate the power of the love of God to bring healing.

. . . In Service

When I asked my Sunday School class last week what they appreciated about the United Methodist Church, Chris Rice commented that he liked the fact that it was a connected church. By joining our resources with thousands of others, we can reach out in ministry in ways no local church could do so alone. On October 27, we will ask everyone to make an estimate of their financial giving to the church in 2003. I ask you now to begin considering your gift to further our ministry here in the Oklahoma City area and around the world.

Food For Skyline

October is our month to help Skyline Ministries replenish their stock of foodstuffs.
NON PERISHABLE items needed:
Peanut Butter
Canned Fruit (very popular)
Canned Vegetables
Soup (all kinds)
Canned Meat (i.e. tuna)

Our goal is 500 cans. Bring your cans to the church office lobby and watch for our progress reports.

The Spare Change For Skyline container will remain in the fellowship time area through the month. Help us make our 500 can goal.

Garage Sale This Month

The Children’s Committee is having a garage sale on October 26th from 7:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. The money will go to the children’s department including new Sonshine Choir robes. If you have items to donate please bring them to the church (already marked with the price) during office hours the week prior to the event. We do not have enough storage to keep them any longer than one week. There will be someone at the church Wednesday and Thursday evenings if this would be more convenient. To volunteer to help with this event please call the church or speak with Jan Zisman.

This Month in Worship:

We return to the Gospel of Matthew this month to listen in on some of the teachings of Jesus. The first and last Sundays explore parables of the kingdom of heaven. Jesus offers a number of images in chapter 13, inviting us to consider many perspectives of the kingdom as if we were examining the facets of a diamond. The parable in chapter 20 challenges deep-seated notions of fairness.

On the second Sunday of the month, we’ll see how Jesus learns a lesson himself, from a Gentile woman no less! The next week, Jesus weighs in on the common problem of dealing with conflict. It promises to be an intriguing month.

Children’s Ministry

There have been exciting things happening in the children’s nursery. The nursery is getting new paint, new carpet, age and developmentally appropriate toys, and much more. The volunteers have worked diligently not just to paint the room’s fresh colors, but also to paint murals in each room. The work should be finished by the end of October. If you would like to volunteer, please call Amy at 524-8428.

We have also registered for some items at Target. We have found that we need some new toys that meet today’s safety standards along with a few other essential items. You may find our list on the automated machine at Target under Mother’s First Name: Crown and Mother’s Last Name: Heights. These items can be presented at the “shower” and dedication that will be announced at a later date. If you have used toys that are in good or exceptional condition, you are welcome to donate these as well. Our nursery has been full of joy and busting at the seams. It is our goal to make this a safe and exciting place for our children.

Youth News

The Crown Heights youth will be participating in the Crop Walk on Sunday, October 27. The money raised goes to local soup kitchens and pantries, as well as, “Family Shelter Kits” and emergency food parcels around the world. The Crop Walk has become a tradition for the youth in this church. You will have the opportunity to make a donation or participate as a part of our group Sunday morning, October 27. The youth will be at all of the sanctuary doors to take donations and applications.

On October 27 the youth will have their annual Halloween Costume Party at the Moore’s home. This is a fun time full of food, fellowship, and costume contests. All youth from the sixth to twelfth grades are invited.
