Congratulations
on 50 Years
Together!
On February 20, my
parents will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. It’s been fun looking
through pictures – captured moments in time that jointly make up the story
of a life together. The pictures from the wedding itself show Dad looking
sharp in a double-breasted suit and Mom beaming with joy, her face framed by
her corsage. Then come the images of their much loved 1956 Crown Victoria,
later to be sold to buy a ticket for Mom to move to Hawaii to live with Dad
while he was in the Army. Before long, my sister and I occupy much of the
photo space – swinging in the backyard, posing in front of Mount Rushmore,
opening packages at Christmas.
I am proud of my
parents and the commit-ment they have made to each other and to their
family. This milestone is an accomplishment in itself but it is really a
celebration of a series of moments – times of laughter and disappoint-ment,
compromises and sacrifices, sharing meals and quiet prayers. May the life
they have given us and the example they have set continue to nourish our
lives, one moment at a time.
Ash Wednesday Service
On February 25, at 6:30 p.m., we begin the observance of Lent with a brief
service in the sanctuary. Those who wish may receive the sign of the cross
made out of ashes. You may also list your concerns and hopes on a slip of
paper and commit it to God in a service of burning.
Doug McPherson
to present 2004
Holland Lectures
February 29
We are pleased to welcome Dr. Doug McPherson to this
distinguished series. Doug is well-known to many at Crown Heights from his
time here as Associate Pastor and active member. He recently retired as
District Superin-tendent of the South OKC District. He has served many
churches in the Oklahoma City area and has led Skyline Urban Ministry and
the Cooperative Urban Parish. He is a graduate of Garrett Theological
Seminary and studied at Cambridge University in England.
Doug has been fascinated recently by the notion of
Christian freedom. What are the limits to our freedom? How do we find
freedom from what holds us in bondage?
This promises to be an extraordinary day with special
music, a dinner, and hymn singing at the evening lecture.

This Month In Worship
We complete
the season of Epiphany this month by exploring Paul’s interesting and
challenging letter to the church in Corinth. These texts touch on some of
the issues most dear to our hearts: human community, love, and hope in the
midst of death. We begin the season of Lent with a special service on Ash
Wednesday, February 25, and end the month with our Holland Lecture.

Thank You
The children’s hallway is painted and looks great!
Sean Milburn will soon finish the rest of the Sunday school rooms. Thanks
Sean.
Thank you to all who purchased candles. The profits will be
used to obtain new games and activities for the older children during
childcare.
I would like to thank all of you who have helped me out,
given me encouragement and such positive comments. You made the newcomer
feel welcome and appreciated. That truly is being in ministry. Thank you.
Trustee Report
2003 Year In
Review
The Trustees would like
to thank all members for their contributions that help to keep our church
property and equipment in good working order. We would like especially to
thank those members who made significant contributions of their valuable
labor and skills to specific projects. Your efforts make a big
difference!
Here is a summary of projects completed in 2003:
Repair fence, church
back yard
Hats off to the Genesis
class!! Their sweat equity saved many hundreds of dollars on this
project. The trustees purchased materials and the class provided labor.
The fence looks great—thanks again!!
Trim and remove selected
trees on church property
This project removed
damaged trees threatening our own property and that of our neighbors and
trimmed back tree limbs brushing against the roof. This was funded by
proceeds from the Lem Wall Endowment Fund for property maintenance.
Parking lot repairs and new parking lot tree
Hats off again, this
time to David McKnight for his Eagle Scout project. A superb job by David
and other hard-working scouts!! Sealing the cracks in the parking lot
helps keep out water and prevents freeze-thaw damage during winter months.
His efforts bought us some time before a resurfacing project will be
necessary. They also painted fresh yellow stripes and planted a new oak
tree in one of the tree wells.
Refinish doors
Several
exterior doors stood in great need of repair. Mark Hall, painting
contractor, has now refinished them and he did an excellent job. Special
donors made this project possible. The Trustees would like to thank the
families of Bill Peavler and Marge Saied for directing memorial gifts to
provide a portion of the funds used for this project.
New mower for church
Dennis and DeLene Moore
generously donated a nearly new riding mower just as our old mower gasped
its last breath. Dennis insisted he give the mower a tune-up before we
received it—awesome!
Organize tools and items
in church garage
Supplied with shelves
and an assortment of hooks and nails; Marion King, Rocky Niles, Andy
Noble, Ethan Noble, and Ed Durell spent an afternoon of male-bonding and
organizing. What a motley crew! Don’t bother looking for that ancient
push-mower, either; we donated it to Habitat for Humanity.
Photographic record of
church and furnishings
Ed Durell led the team
that took digital photos of the church property to provide a visual
inventory. Andy Noble completed a similar project at the parsonage.
Light fixtures on
Western Avenue porch
Although he is taking a
much-deserved rest from Trustee duties, Shane Jones quietly donated time
and materials to refurbish the classically beautiful fixtures on the
porch. Thanks, Shane!!
Other improvements
included:
·
New heater
unit for bell choir room
·
Replaced
compressor on sanctuary air-conditioning unit
·
Repaired
exhaust fan in church kitchen
WHIZ KIDS
24
Whiz Kids are back in the swing of reading with their tutors. Several of
the kids came back from their break talking about the books they were
reading outside of school!! That's quite a change from the beginning.
Plans for a trip to
the Omniplex are underway to take the kids to see a program on Dr. Seuss
and peek in at the Grossology exhibits in February. Excitement fills the
air for many reasons.
Things are going so
well with these kids, there is talk about trying to open up another
session next Fall in the evening, so more kids and more of the CHUM
members could be involved. If you would be interested in being a tutor for
2 hours one evening a week next year, call Janet Kingsolver 524-3895 to
get the details.
Please keep all the
kids and tutors in your prayers as we continue to touch each others' lives
in Christ's name.
SHARE CIRCLE TO BUY A GENERATOR
TALK TO ROD
ABOUT THIS FIRST – HAS NOT BEEN APPROVED
The women of
the Share Circle have just finished studying the problems the people in
Africa face each day. After it was over Sally Hayes asked the question
"What can 8 old ladies really do?" So we “8 old ladies” decided to buy a
generator for the Budaburum Liberian Refugee camp. Two of the Share Circle
members had been in the camp last summer and told of the need for a
generator.
To buy the
generator, the Share Circle will hold a bake sale at the church once a
month. You can buy your fill of tasty baked goods regularly from them.
They also
are planning to sponsor and all-church Flea Market on May 22 at the church.
Members of CHUM are encouraged to bring their Spring Garage Sales to the
church to raise money for the generator. Share Circle will provide tables
and space, lunch, smiling faces to the day. What a better way to fellowship
with your church family and buy a generator!!!
So start
saving your 'treasures' to bring on May 22 and look for the baked goods each
month. Together we can buy the Budaburum Generator.
