The Pastor’s Column

From Dianne’s Desk

Thank you for helping my family and me feel so welcome at Crown Heights! I’ve been really busy these first few weeks, preparing worship services and sermons, getting my office in order, telling Bible stories at Vacation Bible School and working the Oklahoma Conference’s leadership camp for junior high students at Canyon Camp. I’m looking forward to settling into a more regular routine after Jeff and I return from his exchange program assignment with the Canadian weather service in Toronto, July 12-20. This is the first time he’s been asked to represent the NWS Storm Prediction Center for this exchange, so we’re excited to be visiting this beautiful city.

I’m beginning to connect some names and faces, though I’ve got a long way to go! Thank you for being patient with me and reminding me of your names. I hope that everyone will be able to fit “Dessert with Dianne” into your busy summer schedules (See article on page 2). It will be so helpful for me to have some one-on-one conversations with each of you (while you’re wearing a name tag!) about your family, your connection with Crown Heights and your dreams for our future. I can’t wait to hear your stories of the past and your visions for tomorrow.

Please join me in prayer for our congregation as we move forward into this time of pastoral transition and searching for God’s preferred future for Crown Heights.

Blessings, Dianne Kovacs Peters

Dr. Mark Davies

July 15

We are pleased to be welcoming the Reverend Dr. Mark Davies to the pulpit on Sunday morning, July 15th.  Mark is well known to many at Crown Heights, having taught the Pyramid Sunday School Class for quite some time while he and his family were members here.  For those who don’t know Dr. Davies, he serves as the Dean of the Wimberly School of Religion at Oklahoma City University, our only Oklahoma United Methodist college which we support with our apportionment giving. In  addition to his teaching and administrative work, Dr. Davies continues to give direction to OCU’s service learning program which he helped to establish several years ago. This  important component of the students’ educations helps them “give back” to the community in significant, hands-on settings.

Desserts with Dianne

You’re invited for an informal time of getting acquainted, sharing ideas and delicious desserts!  In an effort to get to know our congregation, Rev. Dianne Peters will be spending time with small groups of folks to learn more about them and their dreams for Crown Heights.  Desserts will be offered during the afternoon and evening times, at members’ homes or the church. Be watching for the list of dates and places so that you can find a time that works with your schedule and sign up! If child care is needed, let us know.

Dog Days of Summer Flea Market

It may be too late for “Spring” cleaning, but it’s NEVER too late to de-clutter and here’s your chance! The Mission Committee is going to have a Flea Market on Saturday, August 4th from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on the church lawn. There will be booths to sell your items with any of the proceeds you choose going to the Cuba Mission.

Please let us  know if you will be participating. If you can not join us, but have items to sell, we will be glad to sell them with all of those proceeds going to the cause. No clothes please, unless they are vintage collectibles. Please call Brigette Gean at 524-2849 to reserve a space, to donate items, or for large item pick-up.

Prayer Blanket

Thirty prayer blankets embroidered with our name and emblem were  generously donated to Crown Heights by member, Robert Marks.

These charming embroidered blankets will serve as a symbol from our church and congregation to help express our thoughts and prayers for those on the road to recovery.

Successful Peanut Butter Drive

This year Crown Heights has helped by contributing 126 jars of peanut butter for the food closet at Skyline Urban Ministries.

Once again, Crown Heights continues to generously give to those in need. Thank you.

Music Ministry

by George Massey

July Music Series

The Music Ministry will feature a Vocal and Instrumental Solo series through the first Sunday in August, and an ensemble from our choir will sing on one of the Sundays.

Choir Recruitment

If you have considered being a part of our Chancel Choir, we hope that you will join us in the Fall. As in the past, our Christmas Cantata is the highlight of our musical year, and this December, we will present a wonderful Mark Hayes composition. This one will have part CD's for each member of the choir, so that everyone can have extra rehearsal at their leisure. We are very happy to have members sing and rehearse as their schedules allow. As we do rehearse 5 to 6 weeks in advance, you would always feel prepared each Sunday. If you would only be interested in singing in our Christmas Cantata, we designate around 25 minutes each rehearsal for this special Sunday. Please feel free to contact George if you would like additional information at gmassey4@cox.net or 524-9318.

Hands-On Mission Project

All Crown Heights members are asked to help make a difference in people’s lives by contributing items to be included in the UMCOR Layette disaster kits.

Please support this UMW Conference Project by bringing one or more of the following NEW items to church and placing them in the basket (outside of the Pyramid classroom): 6 cloth diapers; 2 shirts or one-piece body suits; 2 baby washcloths; 2 gowns or 2 sleepers; 2 diaper pins; 1 sweater (open in front); and 2 receiving blankets.

If you are interested in assembling one of the four types

of these disaster kits yourself, look for the fliers on the

UMW bulletin board, which list the items to include and the

instructions for assembling.

Thanks for your participation in this valuable relief effort.

 Missions

Crown Heights U.M.C. is preparing to send a 12 member mission team to Pilon, Cuba on December 2. Our task will be to complete construction for a Methodist church which was severally damaged by a hurricane in 2006. We will be following in the footsteps of several other United Methodist Volunteer in Mission (VIM) teams who have been restoring this church. Our purpose, the VIM purpose, is to share the love of Christ in ways that make a Christian difference. We will do that by sharing meals, working alongside and worshiping with our Cuban hosts.

A number of members of our congregation have asked how they can help and share in this experience. Well, there are a couple of spaces left open if you are interested to see first hand what international mission is like. We will be having a team meeting in July and all are welcome to join in. Like all missions, we have financial needs. Expenses for individual team members, and team expenses for the host country are high and we can use all the financial assistance we can get. We will gratefully  accept donations of all sizes. Checks can be made out to the church with "Cuba Mission" written on the memo line.

Even though we will be restricted on the amount of luggage we can take, our hosts need medicine, children's   items and all kinds of small things like pencils and paper that we can take. We will publish a detailed account of our specific needs as we get closer to December.

Most importantly the team needs prayer partners, someone back home that will pray for the missioner every day. The lives of the missioners and  the life of the congregation can be transformed by prayerful involvement in inter-national mission. Hearts and minds are opened in ways that must be experienced. Won't you join us?

The Whiz Kids are Coming!

The Whiz Kids are Coming!

Soon the halls of Crown Heights will be filled with laughter, hugs, books, and bright-eyed children with their tutors reading, reading and more reading. They will also hear Bible stories and learn that God loves them enough to bring people like you to love them.

We are hoping to have 50 Whiz Kids from Putnam Heights Elementary School and 50 tutors this school year filling our church from 3-5 pm every Thursday afternoon school is in session, from September to the middle of May. Is this the year you become   a Whiz Kids tutor?

We have great substitutes for those times you have to be gone, and we have great kids for you to learn to love. Call Janet at 524-3895 for more details, and to volunteer. The WHIZ KIDS are waiting on you!

Skyline’s Clothes For Kids Drive

August 5-10

"When the 'Clothes For Kids' store started years ago, we never dreamed it would continue to grow each year," says Imogene Bates from Skyline Urban Ministries.  Now she has grown 'children' coming back to say thank you for the clothes they received when they were younger. Those clothes helped them fit in at school.

This year over 1000 children will be able to start school in new clothes because Skyline opened the 'store'. This can't happen without us giving in a BIG way. And here’s how you can help…

Things needed:

  Socks  Shirts  Underwear

  Jeans  Shoes

Gift cards from:  Walmart   and   Payless Shoes

Skyline needs the clothes and gift cards by August 1st in order to get it all set up for the kids to come 'shop' the week of August 6th - 10th.

A group of volunteers from Crown Heights will be 'manning the store' on the evening of Thursday, August 9th, from 6-9 pm. Other volunteers are needed during the day shopping times also.

Bring any new clothes or gift cards to the church during the month of July and place them in the pink grocery carts in the garden room or in the narthex of the sanctuary. You can also bring or send checks to the church noted with “Skyline Clothes” in the memo.

This is your chance to help many children get a good start at school this year. Contact Charlene Jones at 524-5075 to sign up or to see how you can help.
