As far as Jewish teachers go, Jesus was one of the more controversial ones. This was especially evident when his teachings included blatant criticisms of the Jewish leaders’
beloved oral traditions, particularly their purification rituals. These traditions, while allowing for personal piety, distracted from what was really important in the eyes of God and served as outward hallmarks that separated them from their Gentile
neighbors. Piety can be a good thing, but could it also be a latent rebellion against God and neighbor?
